Smart Collaboration: How Lawyers Add Value by Breaking Down Silos
Collaboration isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a business necessity. As the legal, technological, trade, and regulatory environments change ever faster, lawyers need to team up with other kinds of experts across disciplinary, geographic, and organizational boundaries to tackle today’s complex problems. The payout for “smart collaboration” is significant: in-house and external legal teams add greater value, accomplish work more efficiently, innovate faster and better, and attract and retain higher-caliber talent.
Yet, collaborating across silos is often messy, risky, and costly. So unless professionals know why they’re collaborating, it may not be smart. True frontrunners quantify the upside, use behavioral change techniques to drive implementation, and hold people accountable for results. Grounded in a decade of Dr. Gardner’s empirical research, this session features new data-driven research, case studies, interviews, and practical advice.

The Uberization of law is coming. Are you ready for “Lawber”?
As virtual marketplaces for legal services begin to take root, how can law firms future-proof themselves to compete in a world where expertise and pricing are transparent and easily compared by clients?
Drawing parallels to other industries that went through digital transformation, Oz will discuss what changes are expected to the way clients will buy legal services (the business of law) and what changes law firms will have to make to the way they work (the practice of law).

Earning trust to deliver value
Clients don’t feel they’re getting value and law firms don’t understand how to put this right. We look at the other side of the equation from price, at service delivery, relationship management and how to add value.
Our data shows that clients don’t feel they’re getting great value. Why not? This session will look at what firms need to do to change the paradigm and increase perceptions of value for money through better service, relationship management and general effectiveness.
We will look at:
- How to measure service and why all law firms look remarkably similar;
- Which facets of service delivery are actually most important to clients (as opposed to what firms think are most important);
- Why maxing out on the fee revenue doesn’t necessarily provide the highest profit option;
- Why clients feel they’re not being shown the love;
- Why so-called ‘value adds’ don’t actually add the value clients are looking for;
- … And why trust really is the final frontier.

They Aren’t Buying What We’re Selling!
How innovative legal pricing technologies, behavioral economics and powerful pricing psychology create a winning law firm.
When it comes to pricing and in particular our reaction to price, Homo sapiens is not always Homo economicus, the paragon of cold-blooded rationality assumed by many formal economic models.
As buyers, we are all 'predictably irrational'. Why do many prices end with a '9'? Why do we still have a headache after taking an aspirin costing 1p but the headache clears up after taking an aspirin that cost 50p? (New England Journal of Medicine, July 11, 2002)
Understanding even a little of how clients 'process' pricing can provide valuable insights. We will devote a light touch to a few of the concepts including...
- Price-anchoring
- Price relativity & context
- 'Deal effect'
- 'Goldilocks' pricing
- Precise v imprecise (pricing and discounting)
- Unbundling & the ‘de minimus’ effect
- Decoy pricing

Using CRM to Enable Smart Collaboration
We tend to over complicate it, but collaboration is simply the act of working with someone to produce or create. We collaborate in many aspects of our lives but when it comes to finding the best approach to fostering collaboration across marketing, IT and firm leadership, we often fall short.
Whether your next project is a large-scale firm-wide initiative or a specific client campaign, you — and your firm — will be more successful if everyone works cohesively. When teams collaborate, they break down silos and use each other’s expert knowledge to serve clients better with coherent, unified and repeatable solutions.
In this session, we will showcase how LexisNexis InterAction, the market-leading client relationship management (CRM) solution purpose built for law firms, is continuously innovating to deliver a portfolio that enables smart collaboration within your firm by embedding CRM in the daily lives of your Fee Earners.

Legal Tech Disruption – What’s the point?
In an industry that’s billed by the hour, is the epitome of regulation and legalisation, and known for the asymmetric nature of information between lawyers and their clients; it could be forgiven for resisting ‘disruption’ for its own protection and self-preservation. We’ve since introduced Alternative Fee Arrangements (AFAs), Alternative Business Structures (ABS), transparency as an economic ‘added value’, and technology – more specifically ‘LegalTech’ – being a key driver in disruption from a client, Law School, Corporate Legal Department and Law Firm perspective.
Who is in control of the disruption? Is it just LegalTech that matters in a competitive market? And what’s around the corner?
European Director Christiane Muller-Haye explains her views.

1 - AI Wish List (Moderator: Tony McKenna)
We use AI to refer to a series of technologies, including natural language processing, machine learning, and chat bots. Are those technologies enough? Are today's AI tools truly addressing the needs of the law practice? In this session, we will discuss our wish list for AI, including tools of today and tools we would like to see.
2 - Document Automation: Evolution or Revolution (Moderator: Joy Heath Rush)
Document automation has been part of the practice of year for 30 years. However, we continue to suffer from poor adoption of such tools. Lawyers still seem to prefer cut and paste or copy and revise. Is this because the tools haven't evolved sufficiently or is it time for a revolution?
3 - Cybersecurity - Zero Trust Cyber Security (Moderator: Martin Ward)
Trust is the most dangerous vulnerability facing Law Firms because it is the only vulnerability that is also its own exploit. As Law firms face growing pressures from multiple sources how do we build an effective cyber security risk posture and avoid falling victim to attack?
4 - Barriers to user adoption of digital technology in legal sector (Moderator: Andrew Birch)
Despite the proliferation of digital technologies in the marketplace, legal professionals are often reluctant to adopt them. These solutions often promise an increase in productivity, security, revenue and IT professionals are eager to implement them across their businesses. So why do they lack buy-in from the legal teams? What is the driver behind this trend? Find out in this session and hear from both users and providers.

In this session you will learn about the benefits of using cloud services and will hear a real life use case from a Danish legal department that implemented iManage Work in the cloud.
Luminance Case Study Presentation
CEO of Luminance, Emily Foges, sits down with White & Case’s Chief Knowledge Officer, Oz Benamram, to discuss how far the legal industry has progressed when it comes to adopting technology. The past year has heralded a shift in attitudes from widespread scepticism towards artificial intelligence to, more recently, a focus on how best to implement it for the benefit of your firm and clients. This raises a question: are tech solutions still a way for law firms and in-house legal teams to ‘stay ahead’ or more of a necessity to keep up? Drawing on White & Case’s experience of adopting Luminance’s document review platform, Oz will disclose the impact of this technology on how the firm’s lawyers operate, from junior right through to Partner level. Another interesting consideration here is clients: why should they care whether their advisors are adopting technology? These themes and more will be explored in this dynamic discussion.

ROI: Return on Innovation
While the term “innovation” has become a buzzword in the legal industry, it has also become an area that many firms have shifted their focus toward. In many ways, investing in innovative solutions will help drive the future of legal service delivery for law firms and legal departments in various functions such as contract management, e-discovery, alternative fees pricing and more. At large, any organization in any industry uses business intelligence to implement the best tools and practices that will improve their bottom line.
What sets law firms apart from other industries is the gap between understanding what their pain points are and creating an innovative solution that can be executed to optimize their efficiency and performance. Through creating a strategic plan for execution that is paired with innovation and business intelligence, firms will be able to understand where they have become inefficient and ultimately enable themselves to have a comparative advantage over their competition. In doing so, the legal community will be able to experience not only a return on their investment, but a return on innovation.
